KT is investing in Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) in the city of
Clearwater. FTTP refers to the installation and use of fiber-optic
cables to carry digital information directly to homes and businesses.
These cables can contain anywhere from one to hundreds of indi-
vidual fibers, which are long, thin strands of pure glass about the
diameter of a human hair. FTTP will replace the infrastructure that
currently provides telephone and cable modem Internet services to
areas within the city of Clearwater. The benefits of FTTP include, but
are not limited to, increased bandwidth capacity, service reliability, and
future flexibility.
This major FTTP investment represents SKT’s continued commit-
ment to our customers and the community, having served the area
since 1951. “We are pleased to bring this new technology to Clear-
water. Broadband is the future driver of a vibrant economy, and we
want Clearwater to have the opportunity to be at the leading edge,”
said Kendall Mikesell, President and CEO.
Broadband has become an essential part of our daily lives, and it is
evenmore vital to those who live in rural communities like Clearwater.
A broadband connection allows us to use applications like FaceTime,
keeping us close to family and friends who live far away, or to purchase
the items we need without a 30-minute drive to and fromWichita.
Many companies allow their employees to work from home using a
broadband connection, saving drive time and fuel. In some instances,
broadband has allowed young parents to stay and raise their children
in the rural community they grew up in. A broadband connection can
also provide the flexibility to take online classes without ever leaving
home. Broadband also creates economic development—allowing
local businesses to compete on a national, and even global, level.
FTTP availability raises property values, making Clearwater attrac-
tive to families and businesses looking for a new location to live,
work, and
thrive.Wecan only imagine what our future broadband
needs will be.
SKT customers will see an increase in bandwidth once their Internet
service is moved to FTTP. In fact, most will double or triple their
current speed. We are excited to bring these upgrades to phone and
Internet subscribers; there are no planned changes in our cable TV
services at this time. An SKT Customer Care Representative will
contact customers by phone when the construction is complete in
their neighborhood to review their account and schedule their FTTP
installation appointment.
Construction began in January 2017 on the network design that will
include 15 route miles of fiber-optic distribution cable when com-
pleted. The fiber facilities will serve approximately 1,000 residential
and business subscribers. SKT began moving Zone 1 customers to
FTTP in July, starting in Park Glen, and plans to complete the project
in early 2018.
