T
he deadline was Monday, October 5, 2015, and sure enough, by that date SKT had
received 22 great photos for our 2016 Southeast Kansas Area Telephone Directory Cover
Photo Contest. These photos featured a wide variety of subjects including a cow and her
calf, spectacular sunrises and sunsets, twin boys headed to the lake to fish, horses, the
historic Beaumont water tower, and a patriotic front porch.
The photos were carefully numbered and sent to all SKT employees to vote on their
favorites—with first choice receiving three points, second choice receiving two points,
and third choice receiving one point. Once the points were tallied, the 2016 cover was
revealed along with the second and third-place winners.
We are happy to announce that this year’s winner of $100 and the honor of her photo on
the cover of the 2016 directory for southeast Kansas was Sarah Fischer of Burden, Kansas
—a teacher at Central High School. Sarah took the picture of round bales of hay patrioti-
cally painted with the words, “GOD BLESS AMERICA,” while setting up the day before
Burden Dayz. Sarah says, “Participants in the 5K obstacle course had to climb over them.”
Winning $50 and second place was Jane Fry of Elk Falls. Of her photo, Jane says, “This
peaceful winter scene in Elk Falls begged for a photograph of a day and a time long ago.
If only we could hear the stories they had to tell!” Shelley J. von Merveldt, of the von
Merveldt Ranch in Chautauqua County, won $25 and third place for her photo of ashy
sunflowers in the neighbor’s cow pasture.
Thanks to all the SKT customers who entered the photo contest, sharing the beauty of
Kansas as seen from their camera lenses. Since we consider every photo to be a winner,
we often display them on SKT’s Facebook page, our website at
www.SKTMainstreet.com,
and in other publications.

Use Skype on Your
TV for Family Chats
Sure, you can use your laptop for
Skype sessions with Grandma. But
there are big reasons to use the
biggest screen in your home—your
Internet-enabled smart TV—for video
chats instead.
Skype on your TV really is the next-
best thing to being there. You and
your family can relax on the sofa and
talk to a life-size image of Grandma,
and she’ll be able to see and hear
each of you. Unlike with a laptop,
family members won’t have to crowd
around a small screen to join the
conversation.
In addition to an Internet-enabled
smart TV, you’ll need the following:
• A broadband Internet connection
• A Skype account
• An all-in-one TV camera which
includes the Skype app
