4 FALL 2020 BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Fast Response Keeps Business Functioning Due to the smoke damage, Dowd Drug had to quickly replenish its entire inventory. Back on the shelves now are health care products including brand and generic prescription medications, over-the- counter medications, diabetic supplies, medical supplies, wound care items, bathroom aids, canes and walkers, and wheelchairs. Customers can also shop for candy, gifts and novelties, Willow Tree figurines, Hallmark greeting cards, photo processing, and seasonal décor. Pharmacist Julie Priestly owns Dowd Drug with her sister, Jane Clausen. The two also own Adel HealthMart at 113 N 9th Street in Adel, Iowa. Priestly is grateful to Guthrie Center Communications —which provides voice, video, internet, and IT solutions to Dowd Drug—for its excellent customer service after the fire. Priestly said, “We are so lucky to have Guthrie Center Commu- nications in our small town. They were able to assist Dowd Drug right away on the morning after the fire, when we were forced to temporarily move across the street. Geri Thompson (Customer Service Specialist) facilitated getting Paul Brewster (Combination Technician) over to help us out. Paul really went above and beyond to help us make the transition a little easier. He got the internet set up to the building and the phone system moved over within 24 hours, so our patients and doctors could continue to call in their prescriptions as they were used to doing. Paul even helped fight the fire the night before as a part of the Panora Fire Department.” Excellent Customer Service This type of responsiveness and support is what Priestly has Dowd Drug Dowd Drug is a locally owned, independent pharmacy located at 307 State Street in downtown Guthrie Center, Iowa. Begun in 1906, it has served the community during years of major health challenges, from the 1918 flu pandemic to today’s COVID-19 pandemic. On June 24, 2020, Dowd Drug faced a challenge of its own—extensive smoke damage from a fire above the Strawberry Patch clothing shop next door. Despite challenges, this pharmacy keeps serving its customers well
