AI (artificial intelligence) tools can help your business improve efficiency and reduce costs. However, they also present challenges including AI hallucinations, the term used when misleading, inaccurate, or nonsensical results are generated. Why do AI hallucinations occur? Sometimes AI algorithms produce outputs that are not based on training data, are incorrectly decoded by the transformer, or do not follow any identifiable pattern. In other words, they “hallucinate” the response. This can even extend to fabricating links to webpages that never existed or fabricating information entirely. Famous examples of AI hallucinations include: • Google’s Bard chatbot incorrectly claimed the James Webb Space Telescope had captured the world’s first images of a planet outside our solar system. • Microsoft’s chat AI, Sydney, admitted to falling in love with users and spying on Bing employees. This phenomenon explains why the outputs of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT need to be reviewed or fact-checked by humans to ensure their relevance and accuracy. Just because the content appears plausible, doesn’t mean it’s true. Mary and Jeff Brown, Owners
