4 S P R I N G 2 0 1 9 The Mississippi Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America provides character-building and leadership development programs to help young people reach their potential. Last year, 2,597 youth were served in 134 units, 1,087 Scouts attended summer camp, and 2,050 merit badges were earned. These young people also contributed 27,345 recorded service hours in the community, enhancing the lives of many. Mississippi Valley Council Scouting builds character, develops leaders, explores nature, and uses technology Two Illinois facilities are operated by the Mississippi Valley Council. They are the Quincy Scout Shop & Service Center at 2522 Locust Street in Quincy and the Saukenauk Scout Reservation at 2948 E. 1000th Street in Mendon. Quincy Scout Shop & Service Center The Quincy Scout Shop & Service Center employs five professionals and three support staff. From this office, they coordinate all of the activities that take place at Saukenauk Scout Reservation, Camp Eastman, and at locations throughout the 13-county service area. They also manage the Mississippi Valley Council’s Popcorn and Discount Card fundraisers. The Scout Shop sells uniforms, handbooks, BSA apparel, camping gear, knick-knacks, and Camp Eastman/Saukenauk branded gear and equipment. J. David Gilbert, Development Director, said, “We moved to our new Locust Street location in April 2019. The building used to be an animal hospital, and in order to transition to an office, we had to gut the entire interior. Students from the Quincy Area Vocational Technical Center helped with the tear out, Koontz Construction did the renovation, and Adams installed our communications services.” Adams provides Fiber Internet, three phone lines, and an Allworx phone system to the Quincy Scout Shop & Service Center. “We’re pleased with our Allworx phone system. It’s helped bridge the cumbersome communication difficulties we had between our Service Center in Quincy and our field office in Burlington, Iowa. I think everyone in the office would say our BUSINESS spotlight
