4 Things You
Might Not Know
About Pumpkins
Sure, you carve pumpkins every
year for Halloween decorations and
make pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving
dessert. But you may be surprised
to learn these obscure facts about
pumpkins found on History.com:
1.
In 1584, after French explorer
Jacques Cartier explored the St.
Lawrence region of North America,
he reported finding “gros mel-
ons.” The name was translated
into English as “pompions,” which
has since evolved into the modern
“pumpkin.”
2.
Carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lan-
terns originated hundreds of years
ago in Ireland. Back then, however,
jack-o’-lanterns were made out of
turnips or potatoes. It wasn’t until
Irish immigrants arrived in America
and discovered the pumpkin that a
new Halloween ritual was born.
3.
The heaviest pumpkin weighed
1,810 pounds, 8 ounces and was
presented by Chris Stevens at the
Stillwater Harvest Fest in Stillwater,
Minnesota, in October 2010.
4.
The largest pumpkin pie ever
baked was in 2005 and weighed
2,020 pounds.

T
iming really is everything. It can pay off big time to pay attention to the calendar
before you buy, since certain times of the year are traditionally better for getting
bargains on certain types of merchandise.
If you’re in the market for any of the items below, for instance, the shopping experts
recommend you consider buying them inOctober:
Appliances
– The fall season in general is a good time to shop for appliances. Most new
models start coming out around this time, so you can often pick up last year’s models at
a discount.
Jeans
– After the back-to-school rush is over, jeans are one of the more common items
to be leftover and discounted even more.
Patio Furniture
– Were you short on tables and chairs when you entertained outside this
summer? Then grab great deals on patio furniture for next summer while the stores try
to get rid of them.
Cars
– Since many manufacturers release new car models in September, dealerships will
start reducing prices on older models then but these discounts will become substantially
better in October.
Vacations
– In the travel industry, October is one of the shoulder seasons, meaning a
period that’s in between peak-season and off-season travel that combines the advantages
of both. You can book a trip to a summer-heavy destination and save considerably on
lodging and activities since the crowds aren’t around to push prices up. Plus, you should
still be able to enjoy good weather.
Camping Gear
– Stores often discount sleeping bags, lanterns, tents, and other camping
gear in October that didn’t sell during the summer. You can also get good deals on used stuff,
since October tends to be when campers sell their own equipment that’s no longer needed.
At Wheat State Telephone, October is the time to save on ONE PRICE bundles.
